
Be forewarned. You will notice one thing very quickly—I don’t say most of the things you’d expect to hear from someone in my position.
You won’t hear a lot of talk about ‘how to be a good speaker.’ I could care less about being a good speaker. I sometimes say “um”, “er,” and a host of other platform faux pas that could get me thrown out of a Toastmaster’s convention.
I used to stutter.
I used to have terrible stage fright.
I never thought I was “smart enough” or well-educated enough to deserve to be on stage.
I tried so hard to be like all the successful speakers, I lost my own personality in the process. I got lukewarm receptions from my audiences, but almost never anything exceptional. I did a ‘good’ job, but rarely did I do repeat engagements. By all measurements, I was a typical “good speaker.”
But all of that changed when I finally decided to stop trying to be like others and started talking about real-life issues in a way that was down to earth. I dropped the image and started being real. The more transparent I was in my stories, the more people bought into my solutions.
The game changed forever.
I became National Speaker of the Year, spoke on huge stages, started hanging out with celebrities and helped a ton of people!

What has gotten me booked and rebooked on ABC, Fox News, and Headline News, radio, and national print publications like Forbes, The Huffington Post, Essence was not being polished or perfect. It was learning how to CONNECT with my audiences. Most importantly, mastering this skill enabled me to walk away from my corporate job and live my mission to help people live bigger lives.
